Why should personalized, one-on-one learning be reserved for classrooms — when it's needed most at home? Here's the story of how MJK came to be, what we stand for and who's behind it.
"I still remember sitting at our own kitchen table in 2019, curriculum guides spread everywhere, trying to adapt a classroom syllabus built for thirty children into something that made sense for one. There was plenty of advice online — almost none of it written by someone who had actually done this with their own child. That gap is the entire reason MJK exists."
Seven years later, we've sat with hundreds of families going through that exact same overwhelm — and walked them to the other side of it. That's still the only job we're trying to do well.
— Annet Gesare, Founder & Lead Mentor
Combined homeschooling & teaching experience with specialized homeschool training supported in their homeschooling journey
MJK was founded by experienced educators and homeschooling parents who kept running into the same gap: curriculum advice written for classrooms of thirty, handed to families teaching one or two children at a kitchen table. We started MJK to close that gap — dedicating ourselves to supporting families in creating meaningful, personalized learning experiences at home.
Our team blends professional teaching expertise with hands-on homeschooling experience, giving us a practical, evidence-based angle that's rare to find in one place. We've sat on both sides of the desk — planning a national syllabus as classroom teachers and adapting that same syllabus at home for our own child.
We work with both new and experienced homeschooling families to build learning environments that reflect their unique values and beliefs — whether that's a faith-based approach, a strong STEM focus, a Charlotte Mason-style literature program, or simply "give me a plan that works with my job." By partnering closely with parents and educators, we help develop positive strategies that foster strong relationships with learners and address the individual differences that a one-size curriculum ignores.
Together, we design and implement homeschool programs tailored to each child's needs — helping you choose curricula that align with your educational philosophy and support your child's growth at their own pace. Then we go one step further: we help you establish the daily, weekly and monthly schedules that turn a good plan into a sustainable rhythm, so curriculum requirements are met and a positive learning rhythm is maintained long after the excitement of "day one" fades.
Today, MJK works with families across Nairobi and East Africa — from first-time homeschoolers registering with the Ministry of Education for the first time, to seasoned families refining a programme that's been running for years.
There's rarely a single reason a family switches to home-based learning. Here are the ones we hear most often in that first consultation call.
No waiting for thirty classmates to catch up and no rushing a child who needs more time with a tricky concept.
Some families arrive after a difficult experience at school — bullying, anxiety, or a learning need that wasn't being met.
Whether that's faith, culture, or a specific educational philosophy, home-based learning lets families teach it directly.
Travel, relocation, irregular work schedules, or caring for a younger sibling all become easier to plan around.
A curriculum that can bend toward what genuinely excites a learner, instead of a fixed syllabus with no room to explore.
Parents tell us this is the reason they stick with it, even in hard weeks — the relationship that grows alongside the learning.
Whatever brought you here, our first conversation is about your specific reasons — not a generic sales pitch.
To empower families and educators to create meaningful, personalized learning experiences at home, nurturing every child's unique potential — one family, one plan at a time.
Empower parents and teachers with the skills and knowledge to navigate homeschooling with confidence. As both parents and teachers ourselves, we're keen on implementing positive teaching and learning practices that lead to the development of holistic learners — not just test scores.
A short record of the milestones that shaped how we work today.
Two certified educators, already homeschooling their own children, start informally advising friends struggling to plan a Kenyan homeschool curriculum from scratch.
As more families turn to home-based learning, MJK formalizes its first structured offering: one-on-one mentorship sessions and a simple weekly planning template.
Working with families navigating Ministry of Education registration, MJK builds out dedicated curriculum-planning packages and a legal-compliance guide for Kenyan homeschoolers.
MJK begins hosting live webinars on topics families kept asking about — from college-prep portfolios to managing multiple grade levels — and opens a public library of templates.
MJK now supports families across Nairobi and East Africa with mentorship, curriculum design, workshops and legal guidance, still led by educators who homeschool their own children.
Not a one-off consultation and not a rigid curriculum drop-off — a relationship that adjusts as your child grows. Here's the rhythm most families settle into.
A free consultation to understand your child, your household rhythm and what's not working yet.
A curriculum map and weekly rhythm co-designed with you, not handed down as a template.
Regular mentor check-ins to troubleshoot, adjust pacing and catch small issues before they grow.
A termly check-in to see what's working, what's outgrown and where the plan needs to shift next.
We don't push families toward one "right" curriculum. Our job is to help you use the one that fits your child well and to flag the gaps a generic version of it won't cover.
We help you translate the Competency Based Curriculum's assessment expectations into a home setting, including portfolio evidence Ministry reviewers recognise.
For families targeting international examinations, we plan backward from exam boards' syllabi so nothing gets missed before sitting a paper.
Common for returning-diaspora families. We help reconcile credit systems and keep transcripts in a format receiving schools recognise.
Charlotte Mason-style, unit-study and unschooling-influenced families still need clear records — we help build that structure without flattening the approach.
A globally recognized curriculum that develops well-rounded, curious and independent learners through inquiry-based learning, critical thinking and an international minded approach to education.
